Horizontal installations can work well for clean liquids if you make sure the meter stays flooded and air cannot collect. Why Pipe Orientation Changes Accuracy

A Coriolis mass flowmeter measures mass directly by oscillating one or two tubes. Liquid or gas passes through these vibrating tubes and generates a phase shift. The sensor reads mass flow, density, and temperature in real time. If the tube is not completely filled, the oscillation pattern distorts. A half-filled tube does not vibrate the same way as a full tube. The resulting error can be several percent, even with a high-end flow meter. Most engineers skip this part and blame the device later. In practice, the pipe setup matters as much as the meter selection itself.


Vertical Pipe Installation: Upward Flow for Liquids

We recommend vertical pipe runs with flow going upward for almost all liquid services. This arrangement uses gravity to keep the measuring tubes full. Any small gas bubbles or entrained air rise with the liquid and pass through the sensor without getting trapped. A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia ran a DN40 Coriolis meter horizontally on a solvent line. They saw density jumps and mass flow drops at low rates. After we asked them to rotate the meter to a vertical upward line, the readings became stable within 0.15 percent of rate. The line pressure was 4 bar, temperature 28 °C, and the solvent had a viscosity around 20 cP. No other changes were made, only the pipe orientation.

Vertical upward flow also helps with high viscosity fluids like syrup, honey, or heavy fuel oil. The fluid does not drain back when the pump stops. Do not install a Coriolis meter with flow going vertically down for liquids, unless you have a back-pressure device downstream. Horizontal Pipe Installation: When It Works

Horizontal mounting can work if you follow strict rules. The sensor tubes must stay below the pipe centerline so they remain flooded at zero flow. With a U-tube or delta-tube design, orient the sensor so the tubes point downward, not upward. This lets any solids or bubbles bypass the measuring section. For straight-tube Coriolis meters, horizontal mounting is common, but you must still verify that the meter runs full at all times.

Special Cases: Gas, Steam, and Two-Phase Flow

1. Can I mount a Coriolis meter sideways on a vertical pipe?
Yes, if you maintain upward flow for liquids. The sensor itself can be rotated so the electronics are accessible. Just keep the flow path vertical.

2. How do I prevent air from collecting in a horizontal installation?
Make sure the meter always runs full. Install it in a low point of the pipe, not a high point. Add a back-pressure valve downstream if the flow rate can drop below 20 percent of range.

3. Is a vertical down-flow setup ever acceptable for liquids?
Only if you guarantee the meter stays full. This usually needs a pressurized system with high back pressure. We rarely recommend it for normal liquid batching or transfer.

4. Do I need pipe supports or special brackets?
