Elster Flow Meter Solutions: Commercial and Industrial Gas Measurement Systems

Quick Answer: Elster gas meters are common in utility gas billing and industrial gas distribution. For internal plant gas lines, Silver Instruments supplies vortex and thermal mass flow meters with 4-20 mA HART output, pressure and temperature compensation, and shorter lead time. You can get a direct replacement for compressed air, natural gas, biogas, and nitrogen measurement without paying for a full custody transfer package.

Silver Instruments is a flow meter manufacturer and supplier based in China. We ship to Southeast Asia, Oceania, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.

Where Elster Meters Are Used in Commercial and Industrial Gas Systems

Elster, now part of Honeywell, has a wide range of gas measurement products. The RABO rotary gas meter is used in commercial gas billing from DN25 to DN100, with flow rates from 0.05 m3/h to 250 m3/h. The Q.Sonic ultrasonic gas meter is designed for DN100 to DN400 pipelines and can handle flow up to 25000 m3/h. Many industrial plants in Southeast Asia and the Middle East use these meters on gas utility lines, boilers, and combined heat and power units.

In practice, most engineers skip the brand label and look at the application. If the gas line is not a legal metering point for billing, a vortex or thermal mass flow meter from Silver Instruments often does the job for less money.

Common Gas Measurement Applications and the Right Meter Type

Natural gas boiler feed. A paint manufacturer in Vietnam needed to measure natural gas flow to a 4 t/h boiler. Line size DN80, pressure 0.6 bar. We supplied a vortex flow meter with integrated pressure and temperature compensation. Accuracy was ±1.5% of reading after compensation. Output was 4-20 mA HART to the plant PLC.

Compressed air. Many plants do not know how much compressed air they waste. A DN50 line at 7 bar can be measured by a thermal mass flow meter or a vortex flow meter. The thermal mass meter gives direct mass flow in kg/h or Nm3/h. No separate pressure or temperature transmitter is needed for normal compressed air audits.

Biogas or digester gas. Low pressure, dirty, wet gas can be a problem for rotary meters. Silver Instruments insertion thermal mass flow meters can measure biogas in DN80 to DN300 pipes. The probe can be hot tapped. Insertion probes are common for wastewater treatment plants in Australia and Latin America.

Nitrogen and CO2. Vortex flow meters and thermal mass meters both work. For DN25 to DN50 lines, a thermal mass meter is often the simplest because it has no moving parts and does not require long straight pipe runs.

Elster Model Families You May See on Site

RABO rotary gas meters are commercial positive displacement meters. They are accurate at low flow but can fail if the gas carries dust or moisture. Many users install a filter and a separator upstream.

TRZ2 turbine gas meters are high pressure and high flow, often used in gas distribution stations. They need straight pipe length and conditioning plates.

Q.Sonic ultrasonic gas meters offer custody transfer class accuracy, with no moving parts. They are best for large pipelines where the utility owns the measurement point.

Here is the thing. Process gas measurement does not need the same approvals as utility gas billing. We do not sell Elster meters. If you have one of these units and need a spare or a process meter, we can quote an equivalent Silver Instruments vortex or thermal mass meter. We focus on plant process gas measurement where the plant can choose the instrument.

A DN50 compressed air line at 7 bar and 20 to 500 Nm3/h is best handled by a vortex flow meter with PT100 and 4-20 mA HART output. Typical accuracy is ±1.0% of reading. If the flow drops below 10 m/s, switch to a thermal mass flow meter.

On a DN80 natural gas line to a boiler, with pressure between 0.5 and 3 bar and flow from 10 to 300 Nm3/h, we often use a vortex flow meter with integrated pressure and temperature compensation. Output includes 4-20 mA HART plus RS485 Modbus RTU. ATEX Zone 2 housing is standard for this range.

Biogas from an anaerobic digester is different. For a DN200 line with 50 to 1500 kg/h, a thermal mass insertion probe with ATEX Zone 1 certification is a safer choice. The display can show Nm3/h, kg/h, and °C. No bypass is needed.

So we always ask for pressure and temperature before quoting a gas meter. Send us your pipe size and gas name. We select the meter and send the drawing the same day.

Why Process Plants Replace Elster Gas Meters with Silver Instruments

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A user inherits an Elster meter from a gas utility and then needs a second meter for an internal line. The utility line has to stay with the legally approved meter. The internal line does not. Internal line measurement is where we help.

Silver Instruments gas flow meters cost less than custody transfer packages and the lead time is shorter. Standard DN15 to DN100 vortex meters ship in 7 to 12 days. A Q.Sonic custody transfer meter can take several weeks or months because it needs factory calibration and approvals.

But there is a limit. We cannot help with legal metering for gas utility billing in many countries. If your local utility requires an approved Elster meter, keep it. For process measurement, our vortex and thermal mass meters meet most industrial requirements.

FAQ

Can I use a Silver Instruments flow meter to replace an Elster RABO meter on a natural gas line? Yes, as long as it is not a custody transfer or utility billing point. For a DN40 or DN50 internal natural gas line, use a vortex flow meter with PT100 and pressure compensation. Accuracy is ±1.5% of reading. If the line is very small or flow varies widely, use a thermal mass flow meter.

What gas types can Silver Instruments measure? Natural gas, compressed air, nitrogen, CO2, biogas, digester gas, oxygen, argon, and most non-corrosive gases. For corrosive gas, contact us with the gas composition and moisture level.

What is the minimum flow rate for a vortex gas flow meter? It depends on the gas density and pipe size. For a DN50 compressed air line at 7 bar, the minimum flow is about 8 to 10 m/s. Below that, a thermal mass meter is a better fit.

Do you offer ATEX or IECEx certification? Yes. Silver Instruments supplies ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 versions for vortex and thermal mass flow meters. We can provide the certificate with the quote.

How do I get a price quote? Send us the gas type, pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size DN, and flow range in kg/h or Nm3/h. Use email or WhatsApp. Our contact numbers are below.
